Only the Brave is a gripping dramatization of the rescue of the "Texas Lost Batallion" by the Japanese American soldiers of the legendary 100/442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II. This movie is a searing portrait of war and prejudice, taking you on a haunting journey into the hearts and minds of those who lived it.
Lane Nishikawa wrote the screenplay, directed the movie, and plays the starring role. Other actors include Jason Lee, Pat Morita, and Tamlyn Tomita. Following the film, there will be a Q & A session with Lane Nishikawa. DVD copies of the film will be available for sale and signing before and after the film screening.
Admission is free, and seating is limited. This event will take place at the IUPUI Campus Center, Fourth Floor, Room 450, on Monday, February 23 at 5:OOpm. Enter the parking garage from Vermont, just west of the Campus Center which is located at 420 University Blvd.
(W. Michigan St. & University Blvd) on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis.

News and Notes
Huge THANKS to Tae Carter for being responsible for the delicious ozoni at the chapter Shinnenkai on January 25, 2009. She planned and purchased supplies, did the advance prep work, then cooked it for us at the Indiana Humanities Council Building. We couldn't have done it without her taking the initiative.
Congratulations to Jean Umemura who was honored with a JACL Silver Pin Award at the Shinnenkai. This award is presented to an active member who is selected for giving outstanding and exceptional service to his/her chapter for a minimum of ten consecutive years.
Thanks to Toshi Ogawa for the interesting and entertaining presentation of the Year of the Ox at the Shinnenkai.
JACL applauds the excellent choice of General Eric Shinseki for Secretary of Veteran Affairs. He was the first Asian American to become a four-star general in the US Army and served as Army Chief of Staff. He is a highly respected Japanese American from Hawaii, and his commitment to the Asian American community is noteworthy.
Hoosier Chapter member Lisa Hanasono attended the JACL Pacific Citizen Editorial Board meeting in Los Angeles the last weekend in January. She is serving as Midwest District Council's representative. Check out the newspaper's revamped website at www.pacificcitizen.org. One of the benefits of membership is receiving semi-monthly copies of the Pacific Citizen, JACL's national newspaper.
Thanks to Nancy Conner for representing Hoosier Chapter on matters related to the Midwest District Council's oral history project. We are fortunate that Nancy is willing to serve with her considerable background, knowledge, and skills. She has acted as chapter historian, and she has compiled a scholarly research paper related to the history of Japanese Americans in Indiana. A copy of Hoosier Chapter's history can be found at www.jaclmdc.org.
Carmel Sister Cities, Inc. sponsored an open house honoring new plant and structural installations at the Japanese garden at City Hall in Carmel in September, 2008. The garden commemorates Carmel's Sister Cities relationship with Kawachinagano, Japan.
Please renew your JACL membership and ask friends to consider joining. Our organization counts on membership dues to support its many functions and programs. Thanks to Tanya Krukemeier who graciously accepted the position of Hoosier Chapter Membership Chair.
Got any ideas for programs for future meetings? Please share your thoughts with a Board member because we would like to pursue topics/activities of interest to you. Your input is valued and appreciated.
