We are saddened by the news that Itoko Maeda died July 24, 2008. She was 89 years of age.
Rev. Maeda was born in Tokyo, Japan on September 4, 1918, to the late Keizo and Yone Maeda. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States and began her career as a school teacher. She then received her calling to become a Missionary for the Disciples of Christ.
She served on the mission field in Japan, Okinawa, Brazil, Bolivia, and America. She also served as professor of the Japanese language at IUPUI. Rev. Maeda provided spiritual guidance to many Japanese living temporarily and permanently in Indiana.
Rev. Maeda is survived by a sister, Kimiyo Sawano, who resides in Tokyo, Japan.
A memorial service for Rev. Maeda will be conducted by Rev. Sue Shadburne Call on November 20, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at Downey Avenue Christian Church at 111 South Downey Avenue, Indianapolis 46219, (317) 359-5304.
