Come join us for a pitch-in lunch and learn about the fascinating subject of acupuncture. Akimi Bash, who practices acupuncture locally, will give a lecture regarding Japanese, Korean, and Chinese acupuncture. She will describe how she combines these techniques with sports medicine.

The event will take place on Sunday, October 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, located at 6450 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis (just south of 65th and Allisonville Road). Please note the later-than-usual meeting time, 2 p.m.

As usual, paper goods and drinks will be provided by the Chapter. Please bring a covered dish to share (meat, salad, vegetable, rice, or dessert). Guests are welcome.

Thanks to Jean Umemura for making arrangements for the church, and to Yas Matsumoto for contacting the presenter.

JACL National Convention

(based on Lisa Hanasono' s report to the Hoosier Chapter Board, July, 2008)

Thank you for allowing me to represent the Hoosier Chapter at the 2008 JACL National Convention in Salt Lake City. It was an honor to serve as our chapter's delegate! From emotionally charged business meetings to a classy Sayonara banquet, the convention was an experience that I will never forget.

Some key moments from the convention include:

  • A Plenary Session that featured the importance of the Japanese Americans' Redress - both historically and today. John Tateishi and representatives from Jewish and Muslim communities presented their perspectives.

  • Another Plenary Session that featured important Asian American Issues today. Speakers discussed immigration policies and health care for Asian Americans.

  • Attending workshops on Asian American (mis)representations in the media, preserving family histories, and diversity in the Nikkei Community.

  • Serving as one of the judges for the 2008 JACL Min Yasui Oratorical Competition.

  • Participating in the 2008 JACL National Board Elections. I had the honor of seconding the nomination for David Kawamoto for Vice President of Planning and Development. In addition, I voted early on Saturday morning (the polls opened at 6 am!).

  • Attending the performance of a Japanese musical titled Nihonmachi. Meeting former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta.

  • Witnessing the youth members rally to advocate for a resolution on the need for human rights in North Korea. It was a joy to see the youth members work together to get their resolution passed.

  • Participating in the JACL's Silent Auction. This year, the silent auction raised over $8000! Although my bid did not win, there were some pretty exciting items like an Ipod Touch and an autographed baseball jersey. (The jersey was auctioned at over $600!)

  • Listening to astronaut Dan Tani deliver the keynote speech at the Sayonara Banquet. He showed video clips and photos from his recent expedition to space.

  • Attending the JACL National Board meeting on Sunday morning before catching my plane to Indianapolis.

Several highlights from the business sessions include:
